The Successful Landing Of The "Perseverance" Spacecraft On Mars

The landing of the "Perseverance" spacecraft on Mars left NASA scientists confused after taking strange pictures that "supported the idea of life on the Red Planet".

The Successful Landing Of The "Perseverance" Spacecraft On Mars

The "Perseverance" vehicle landed on the surface of the Red Planet, on Thursday, February 18th, after traveling 293 million miles from Earth to Mars.

After seven minutes of extreme terror, NASA’s newest spacecraft safely arrived at the surface. Seconds later, the "Perseverance" probe sent the first image of the surface of the Red Planet.

Scientists have not found any evidence of past or present life as we know it, yet, but evidence showed during the ancient Nuxian period (a geological system and early time period on Mars) that the surface environment of Mars had liquid water and may have been inhabitable for microorganisms.

NASA's Unexplained Files program on the Science Channel revealed how NASA got a surprise the last time it landed on the red planet.

The narrator explained in detail: "NASA's mission to Mars is at stake. The entire $ 800 million (£ 610 million) operation is dependent on the high-risk Opportunity probe landing inside the crater of Eagle."

"When the Opportunity probe starts transmitting, the joy of controlling the mission on Earth quickly turns into shock. The surface of Mars is covered with small spherical rocks," he added.

Planetary scientist Professor Jim Bell explained how they quickly identified what later became known as "blue berries".

We look around, we take pictures, and we see the Earth is literally covered in these little spherical pellets and this is really strange. What are these things and where did they come from?" He said.

He explained, "Mars is the red planet, everything is red, and these are less red, and this is what blue meant."

The presence of spherical rocks, which were of a different color from the surrounding terrain, raised the question of how they got there.

Astrophysicist David Breen, now on the NASA Advisory Board, recalled his thoughts at the time.

"And does it have an artificial source? Obviously, something powerful happened that detonated craters from the crust of Mars. Something is going on. But if it indicates the presence of water, the results are amazing."

Soon, researchers developed a theory about rocks that "supports the idea of life on the Red Planet."

Image analyst Mark Dantonio detailed how the team ended up concluding that the discovery indicated the presence of water, the building block of life on Earth.

He said in 2018: "Mars berries may look a bit strange, but they are also here on Earth. They are created in the presence of water, and these small shapes are called concretions that form in rocks as water circulates through them."

"The water on Mars is very exciting because it means that at some point, Mars may have been habitable," he said.

"We have active groundwater, and this is what you need on Earth for life, and this may be an environment in which life can thrive," added Dr. Alan Treman, a meteorologist.
