BEIJING (Reuters) - China will hold discussions on building a defense system against near-Earth asteroids as the country ramps up its long-term space ambitions, a senior Chinese space agency official said on Saturday.
China has made space exploration a top priority in recent years, with the goal of creating a program that will operate thousands of space flights annually and carry tens of thousands of tons of cargo and passengers by 2045.
Last year, the European Space Agency signed a deal worth 129 million euros (156 million dollars) to build a spacecraft for a joint project with NASA to study how an asteroid deflected to Earth.
China is pushing ahead with a mission as a space probe will land on an asteroid close to Earth to collect samples, and return to Earth to launch a capsule containing the samples, then orbit another comet, Xinhua News Agency quoted Yi Bijian said.
Yi said that the task might take about a decade to complete.
Last month, China and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an international research station on the moon.
