It is a common device for a home network, a piece of network equipment that allows communication between your home network and the Internet (the router directs the Internet connection to all desktop computers, tablets, smartphones, and other connected devices).

What is a router

The router is used in the home and in small networks and more properly is a residential gateway.

What does a router do?

The router is the first safety line against unauthorized access to the network. Activating the highest level of protection on the router is the best way to keep your computer system and information safe from attacks.

Routers contain software called firmware that should remain as up-to-date as it was when it was released from the factory.

Most routers connect to other network devices via network cables only and do not require any drivers to run on Windows or other operating systems. Routers that connect to a computer via USB or FireWire usually require drivers to function properly.

The router works as a DHCP (Global Configuration Protocol, Dynamic Host) server on small networks, creating private IP addresses like no other.

Routers come in many shapes and sizes. Most of it is manufactured by companies such as Linksys, 3Com Belkin, D-Link, Motorola, TRENDnet and Cisco.

How does the router work?

The router communicates via a modem (a connected device such as a cable, telephone line, satellite, or optical fiber) to other devices to allow communication between these devices and the Internet. Most routers, including wireless routers, usually have multiple network exits to make room for many devices that can connect to the Internet simultaneously.

Usually, the router connects via a network cable to a modem via the Internet port or WAN (Wide Area Network consisting of several local networks) and then connects again via the network cable to the network connection card to the number of wired network devices you want. The wireless router can communicate via various wireless standards (which are international standards and standards set by the IEEE to be used as a global standard in wireless networks) to devices that must support the user's private standard. Before choosing the devices that we will use in the network, it is necessary to know the standard that we will deal with in order to buy what is compatible with it.

The IP address assigned to a WAN connection or the Internet is a public IP address, and an IP address assigned to a LAN or LAN is a private IP address. This address assigned to the router is usually the default gateway for multiple devices to enter the network.

Wireless and wired routers with multiple connections also work as a simple network switch that allows devices to communicate with each other, for example: Multiple computers connected to a single router can be configured to share the printer and files between each other.

What to do for router safety

We'll introduce a number of common things that you should do with a router:

  • Change the router password.
  • Confirm wireless security on the router.
  • Firmware update for the router.1

Choosing a router

There are several types of routers available, ranging from the cheapest to the highest standard. Here are some of the available routers:

  • 802.11ac router
  1. Linksys EA6500 , Linksys' premier smart wireless router, offers users complete control of their wireless network at home from anywhere, via a mobile app or browser.
  2. The Netgear AC1750 (R6300) is a good choice for large homes with lots of wireless devices.
  • 802.11n router
  1. Netgear N300 WNR2000 : High quality router with permanent warranty, meaning if you encounter any problem while using it, you can contact Netgear to help you fix the defect.
  2. TP-LINK TL-WR841N : TP-LINK router features external antennas that provide a stronger connection.
  • 802.11g router

  1. Netgear WGR614 : The WGR614 is a first-class router with a wide signal range (suitable for homes with brick walls or smaller obstacles) with a 3-year warranty.
  2. Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G : This router requires no time to install. Its signal range is strong, so you don't have to worry about slow page loading.
