Engineers have developed a 3D camera that is as easy to use as the one in smartphones.

This principle was followed by a professor at Purdue University with more than two decades of experience in the field of 3D imaging, where he developed a new technology aimed at making 3D cameras easy to use.

Professor Song Chang, a professor at Purdue University's School of Mechanical Engineering, led a team to create technologies that help compress 3D camera files.

HOW DOES THE 3D CAMERA WORK?

For Prof. Zhang's team, they automated the process of "tuning" by developing algorithms that quickly determine an optimal presentation method.

The researchers also devised another method for generating highly accurate 3D images, using the autofocus feature on electronically adjusted lenses.


WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF 3D CAMERA TECHNOLOGY?


The technology of three-dimensional cameras has the ability to leave a greater impact in the field of photography than the traditional two-dimensional cameras in circulation today.

The work of Professor Zhang's Purdue team has been published in the scientific journal "Letters of Optics" by the Optical Society of America.

In addition to the journal “Optics and Lasers in Engineering,” part of this research was funded by the US Department of Justice and the National Science Foundation.
